Might come off as totally unrelated if you’ve watched a movie called “Mississippi Burning”, but I rewatched it in 2020 and Holy Spirit gave me a whole new perspective to it. He also gave me another understanding of why it’s very important for Him to be the only One Who gives us understanding of God’s Word.
Mississippi Burning highlights the civil rights era in the United States and features increased racism, segregation, discrimination, and resulting killings of black people. It shows a white FBI officer investigating the murder of 3 Civil Rights workers, 2 of which where white and 1, black. The white activists were killed because they’d been seen with the black activist.
In a scene, the wife of one of the murderers — a Police Officer — says hatred is taught and quotes Genesis 9:27 as the scripture that etches hatred and segregation in the hearts of white families from childhood. She reveals her Police Officer husband as a culprit in the 3 Civil Rights workers’ murders shortly after to one of the investigators.
“After the flood, Noah began to cultivate the ground, and he planted a vineyard. One day he drank some wine he had made, and he became drunk and lay naked inside his tent. Ham, the father of Canaan, saw that his father was naked and went outside and told his brothers. Then Shem and Japheth took a robe, held it over their shoulders, and backed into the tent to cover their father. As they did this, they looked the other way so they would not see him naked. When Noah woke up from his stupor, he learned what Ham, his youngest son, had done. Then he cursed Canaan, the son of Ham: “May Canaan be cursed! May he be the lowest of servants to his relatives.” Then Noah said, “May the Lord, the God of Shem, be blessed, and may Canaan be his servant! May God expand the territory of Japheth! May Japheth share the prosperity of Shem, and may Canaan be his servant.” — Genesis 9:20-27 NLT
Upon reading said scripture, Holy Spirit helped me see how misinterpreting and misunderstanding this scripture is what makes white people — and essentially other races — think they’re a superior race to black people.
Now I’m reading Deuteronomy 3 and He’s giving me a glimpse into how it’s misinterpretation and misunderstanding is pretty much a huge part of what influences the different eras of exploration, conquering, land acquisition, slavery and it’s ripple effects.
Holy Spirit shows me one of the reasons why people perish for lack of understanding. He shows me how when scripture is misread — without His guide into it’s mysteries and truth that only He can reveal —; we make a mess of things… even sacred things like intimately relating with our God and worshipping Him in Spirit and in Truth, knowing and doing His will.
It’s no wonder why we find ourselves where we’re at… where things have repeatedly been made a mess off… where the world is facing the consequences of misinterpreting and misunderstanding the Word and Essence of God.
